Understatement of the Month Cont'd

Below I attempted to put in context the media's decision to run with "wafergate". Objectively speaking, whether or not Harper ate a communion wafer would not seem to have a dramatic impact on every-day Canadians and the broader general public, like say, a steep rise in gas prices would.

I can't see it being too important to the single mom who has to pick up her kids from school, feed them, then go back for her second shift. Nor would the newlywed couple, who has concern about the price of new houses or the cost of raising their new baby, be particularly interested in this unique event, certainly not as a "top story". I suspect the aging couple, faced with the decision of whether they must go into a nursing home, wouldn't have Harper eating a wafer in their top 100 list of important things to know about. In fact it's difficult to imagine any group or demographic finding this story meaningful to them.

Any group except one.

Libbloggers seemed to enjoy the event very much. Left leaning posters and commenters - the relatively small group of Canadians who, for purely politically partisan reasons have an interest in base attacks against the Prime Minister - went on and on about it. Indeed the story may have originated with a highly partisan Liberal blogger.

On its face it was a partisan hit piece, the only purpose being to smear one's political opponent. The only ones who'd find this of any real value were Harper's political opponents:

both those who overtly proclaim their allegiance to left and their opposition to Harper, such as Liberal party members and libbloggers, and those in the media who still hide behind the veneer of impartiality.

It is ironic that some of these bloggers are the first to attack religion, especially conservative religious expression, and suddenly they are the "defenders" of allegedly offended Catholics? That's why it seemed to me like a smear job from the very beginning. That, and the fact that I couldn't find any real, genuinely offended Catholics. The only one was Msgr. Hennebury from the first Telegraph Journal story, but it looks like he was set up.

  2. This is a repeat of the 'Mulroney birthday wish'.
Pretend to hold Brian Mulroney in high reguard and come to his defence,
pretend to respect religion and come to it's defence.
Of course the target is Mulroney supporters and Catholics that vote Conservative, embarrassing PMSH is the gravy.

Liberals 'big tent' houses the fewest supporters in 100 years of history.
So Iffy's challenge is to raid the other parties tents with fake support,
and in Liberal fashion, will ignore the issues when in power.

Tent raiding Dippers: pretend support for EI360, national daycare. Like either are going to happen, with or without Liberals in office!

Tent raiding Bloc/Greens: pretend defenders of the environment...'we didn't get it done'...(and never will)

The West: fake support for the oilsands all the while conspiring to backdoor the industry demise with 'constitutional takeover' with new enviro laws...happening in committee now.

Just like Chretien and his GST promise,
Iffy's Liberals will NOT reverse all those Harper policies....because Iffy agrees with PMSH on every issue (except Khadr, but then who really knows what Iffy really thinks on that subject, a little sleep deprivation torture?, he won't lose any sleep over it)

  3. The Harper Conservatives have a tight grasp on the nation building files that Iffy so wants to raid.
The Arctic, military rebuilding, rebuilding traditional Canadian industry like shipbuilding..

And the Harper Conservatives have a firm grip on the 'common sense' files, like immigration and Native land claims/rights , law and order...

Iffy's liberals clutch the 'crap on everything and hope something sticks' file.

We are so going to get a majority this time.
